I am always on the hunt for interesting locations to carry out themed shoots. I wanted an old ‘abandoned’ building that was also legal to shoot in. After scouring Cincinnati, I found an old building on the old brewery trail that rented spaces and locations for artists. So I reserved a spot. I had the steampunk gowns custom designed by a shop in Hungary called Fairyshop, and the steampunk Headpieces made by The Head Mistress to bring this to life. I shopped for props with my husband and brought this shoot together in less than two weeks.

The biggest challenge shooting in a location like this is a few: one, having never visited, but having a limited amount of time to shoot, you go in blind and have to think on your toes to make the best use of time.

This location had a couple of rooms I wanted to shoot in, and we had to travel with our props on different levels which cut into time.

I also had to work with what was available. Some areas had props or items in the way, and others were wide open and I had to create scenes that made the shot interesting.

In the last spot, there were other vendors’ tables and work items that we had to workaround. Boxes, crafts, and more. It isn’t your traditional studio space, but I loved the old industrial feel of it, so I worked around the stationary objects and even used them to frame the images and add interest in shape, color, and story.

The shot with the metal grates was last minute. We were just about to wrap up when I had the models stand behind it to shoot.

I particularly loved the gated area with the colored pipes and natural light.

I added some digital effects in the post and was really happy with the results.

I often create themed shoots from 80s flicks to crazy couture themes, but I have to admit, this might be my favorite yet.
